Privacy policy

What we collect when you read this site, why, and what you can do about it.

Last updated: 2026-09-12

Who this policy covers

Cernary is operated by Wizards Down Under Pty Ltd, ABN 52 687 674 291, a company registered in Australia.

This policy applies to cernary.com and describes what happens to information about you when you visit it. For anything not covered here, or to make a request about your own data, contact us at contact@cernary.com.

Information we collect

Cernary does not require an account to read the site, and we don't operate a login system. The information we collect falls into two groups.

Analytics, via Google Analytics (GA4). When you visit the site, Google Analytics collects, on our behalf, information including: cookies or similar identifiers placed in your browser, general device and browser information, your IP address (which Google may use to derive approximate, city-level geographic location before discarding or truncating the precise address), the pages you view, how long you stay, and the site or search engine that referred you. We use this only in aggregate, to understand what content is useful and what isn't; we do not use it to build individual profiles or to identify you by name.

Information you give us directly. If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you write to us. If a newsletter signup or comment feature is live on the site, it will collect the email address or content you submit through it, and this policy will be updated to name that feature specifically before it collects anything new.

We do not collect payment information, government identifiers, precise location, health data or any other sensitive category of information, and we have no reason to.

Why we collect it

  • To understand which articles are useful to readers, so we know where to put research effort next.
  • To find and fix problems: pages that error out, links that are broken, devices the site renders badly on.
  • To respond to the emails you send us and to act on corrections, legal or privacy requests.
  • To meet basic security and abuse-prevention needs, like noticing when a page is being scraped or attacked at a rate that degrades it for everyone else.

Third parties and international transfer

We use Google Analytics (Google LLC) to collect the analytics information described above, and Google's own privacy policy governs how it handles and stores that data. We use Google Cloud (Google LLC) to host the site itself, and Cloudflare, Inc. for domain and DNS services. These providers process data on infrastructure located in the United States, and Cernary is based in Australia, so information collected through this site is transferred between Australia and the United States as a normal part of running the site. We do not sell any information we collect to anyone, and we do not share it with third parties for their own marketing purposes.

Cookies

Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser to distinguish one visit from another. You can block or delete these cookies in your browser settings, or use a browser extension that blocks analytics scripts, without losing access to any part of the site. We do not currently use cookies for advertising or cross-site tracking.

Retention

Analytics data is retained under Google Analytics's standard retention settings, which we have not shortened from the default at this time. Emails you send us are kept for as long as they're useful to the correction, legal or business record they relate to, and are deleted or archived once that purpose has passed.

Your rights and how to exercise them

Cernary is a small operation. Under Australian law, businesses below a certain size are generally exempt from the Privacy Act, and Cernary likely falls under that exemption today. We are choosing to follow the substance of the Australian Privacy Principles anyway, and to offer every visitor the same rights regardless of where they live, rather than only extending them where a law happens to require it.

You can ask us at any time to tell you what information we hold about you, correct it, or delete it. Email contact@cernary.com with your request; if it concerns analytics data tied to your browser rather than your name, tell us what you can (the approximate date and page you visited, your general location) so we can attempt to locate it, though aggregated analytics data that no longer identifies an individual browser or device may not be separable from the rest of the dataset. We will respond and act on legitimate requests without unreasonable delay.

We have not received the level of traffic that would trigger California's CCPA/CPRA thresholds, but we think a public commitment to these rights is the right thing to publish either way, consistent with general good-practice expectations like California's Online Privacy Protection Act (CalOPPA).

Children

Cernary is a general-audience site about kitchen equipment and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

Changes to this policy

If we change what we collect or why, we'll update this page and move the date at the top. For a material change, such as adding a new tracking technology or a new third party that processes your data, we will note the change here for at least one review cycle rather than silently updating the date.
